Sommer's book "Why Honor Matters" goes a long way for an academic to look into the strengths and weaknesses of both Honor and Dignity Cultures. A worthy addition to library in itself, it helps cement the differences between the two in terms of the mechanism of the culture as well as some expected values.
In a dignity culture, you are born with a full cup. Act in an undignifying manner and you some of the content of that glass splash out. Run out, and you're a man without dignity.
In an honor culture, you are either born with an empty glass, or one half full. Act dishonorably and you lose water. Act with honor, and more is added to your cup.
The problem is, what happens when each go wrong, and is the other, the solution?
